Carmen, a bohemian worker in a Seville cigarette factory, sets her sights on young soldier Don José. After injuring a coworker, Don José is ordered to arrest her but is persuaded by Carmen to let her escape, resulting in his own imprisonment. Meanwhile, Carmen shifts her attention to the bullfighter Escamillo. Upon Don José's release, jealousy and rejection drive him to vow revenge.

Lotte de Beer’s production questions the true freedom of the iconic Carmen: Is she truly independent, or merely a prisoner of a myth created by men?
