Deutsche Oper Berlin - Lucia di Lammermoor

Long before the cinematic popularity of Downton Abbey or the Jane Austen craze, the scandalous inner world of the British landed gentry became the setting for Italian opera. With his 1835 musical adaptation of Walter Scott’s hit novel The Bride of Lammermoor , Gaetano Donizetti created a dramma lirico that remains the epitome of Italian Romanticism to this day. Set in Scotland around 1700, this tragedy stands as the most famous example of the transformation of the virtuosic bel canto style into a highly expressive portrayal of extreme emotional states; it also features what is arguably the most famous mad scene in Italian opera. Filippo Sanjust’s production evokes the atmosphere of an operatic evening from the era of the work’s creation through the use of painted backdrops and footlights. Michele Spotti, Principal Guest Conductor of the Deutsche Oper Berlin, conducts the company’s ensembles for the first time in his new role. The virtuoso Nina Minasyan appears as Lucia. We welcome the young Mexican-American tenor Galeano Salas as Edgardo—his debut at the Deutsche Oper Berlin following acclaimed performances at La Scala and in Munich, Dresden, and Verona, among others.

On September 24, 1961 the Opernhaus that had been inaugurated in 1912 and destroyed during the War was reopened as Deutsche Oper Berlin. Ever since it has been Berlin´s largest and Germany´s second largest music theatre, featuring among the most modern institutions in Europe. The straightforward and elegant building that was realized by architect Fritz Bornemann (he also conceived the America Memorial Library and the Haus der Berliner Festspiele, a. o.) seats 1.859 and guarantees a maximum viewing and hearing experience for every visitor.
