L’amore artigiano
08.05.2027 - 15.06.2027 | Landestheater Salzburg
Today, Florian Leopold Gassmann is remembered primarily as the teacher of the famous Antonio Salieri – but the musical discovery of “L’amore artigiano” recalls the great success he once had as a composer. Together with the writer of comedies Carlo Goldoni, who heralded a new era for Commedia dell’arte with new characters, vivid dialect material and refined texts, Gassmann created a musical comedy of errors reminiscent of “The Servant of Two Masters”.
Unheeding of her father’s warnings, Angiolina has fallen in love with Giannino, but he loves her neighbour Rosina, with whom Titto is smitten as well. Madame Costanza is trying to confess her feelings to Giro, but she is interrupted by Rosina and Angiolina … and Giro is suddenly flirting with Rosina, which does not please Madame Costanza at all. There will be many comedic challenges to overcome so everyone can find their better half by the finale …
In 2027, the Schwetzing SWR Festival celebrates its 75th anniversary. The festival’s programme is dedicated to both fostering new talent and preserving musical traditions. The anniversary season opens with and centres on the rediscovery of the historic opera “L’amore artigiano”, which was performed at the Schwetzing Rococo Theatre on 24 May 1772. The premiere in Schwetzing on 30 April 2027 is followed by the premiere in Salzburg on 8 May 2027.
Once famous, now – unjustly – all but forgotten: Florian Leopold Gassmann (1729–1774) wrote an opera for the Venice carnival season every year until 1762. He was appointed chamber composer to the emperor in 1764 and court conductor in Vienna in 1772. He met young Antonio Salieri in Venice in 1766 and had a crucial impact on the latter’s career by inviting him to come to Vienna.
The new staging of the musical comedy is in the capable hands of renowned director Amélie Niermeyer, who has, for instance, worked for the Bavarian and the Vienna State Opera as well as for the Schwetzing Festival. She stages the work as a contemporary comedy with much quirky humour. Carlo Bendetto Cimento contributes his expertise as a master of musical fireworks.
