Figaro, the Count’s valet, is engaged to Susanna, the Countess’s maid. But the Count is pursuing Susanna, and the Countess suffers from his infidelity. Figaro hatches a clever plan to teach his master a lesson. What unfolds is a “crazy day” (as the original play by Beaumarchais is subtitled), full of disguises, misunderstandings, and comic confusion – ending in reconciliation and forgiveness.

In her production, Lotte de Beer explores themes of sex and power through shifting perspectives. Each of the four acts focuses on a different character: the Count, Susanna, the Countess, and Barbarina.
