Opening concert Wien Modern
The ORF Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra and Vimbayi Kaziboni, now very familiar to local audiences as Conductor in Residence at Klangforum Wien, open the »Wien Modern« festival and the »Nouvelles Aventures« cycle. This concert is hard to beat in terms of topicality and global relevance: Kaziboni comes from Zimbabwe and was educated as a Fulbright scholar in Los Angeles and Frankfurt am Main. The jazz trombonist and composer George Lewis was born in Chicago and now teaches at Columbia University in New York. Together they have developed a program that combines works by Lewis himself with pieces by Jessie Cox, a Swiss national with roots in Trinidad and Tobago who teaches at Harvard University, and Hannah Kendall, a British woman with roots in Guyana. In Cox's words, this evening reflects »questions of ethnicity, migration, national belonging and our relationship to the planet«.
