The Bat - Pride Edition
09.06.2026 - 30.06.2026 | 19:00 | Wiener Volksoper
Every June, Pride Month celebrates the visibility of queer culture and also commemorates the ongoing fight against exclusion and discrimination. Pride stands for resistance and joy! And what better work to explore themes of eroticism, love, and societal expectations than Johann Strauss’ Die Fledermaus?
Operetta, of all genres? Yes – no genre is queerer! From its beginning, operetta was subversive and free-spirited, always playing with gender roles and desires. Through masquerades and transformations, it tells stories of people who adopt – or are forced to adopt – different identities. How does the narrative change when relationships are not automatically heterosexual? When societal norms create not only amusing deceptions but existential life lies?
For this special production, Moritz Franz Beichl has written a new version of the text. No matter whom you love or how you identify – join us in celebrating Pride Month, operetta, and the liberating laughter about the masks society tries to impose on us.
