The Csárdás Princess
25.05.2026 - 21.06.2026 | Wiener Volksoper
Operetta by Emmerich Kálmán
In German with German and English surtitles.
The famous chanteuse Sylva is forbidden from marrying her aristocratic lover Edwin. His parents arrange for him to be drafted into the army and engaged to a countess. However, at the engagement party, Sylva unexpectedly appears...
Work on The Csárdás Princess began in 1914, but after the outbreak of the First World War, it was set aside for some time. The final version of the piece reflects the “Great War” and the imminent fall of the monarchy in various ways. Director Johannes Erath poses the question in his production: “Why do we still need the theatre when the world seems to be collapsing? Why do we only realize the true value of things once they are lost? Can we invent an evening at the theatre where every soul in the audience can be enchanted?”
Introduction to the work:
For all performances, there will be a free introduction by the dramaturgy team 45 minutes before curtain-up.
