An effervescent youthful work: Schubert's Third
Franz Schubert was not yet twenty years old when he composed his Third Symphony. It was performed for the first time in a private circle, in the flat of the Viennese merchant Franz Frischling in Dorotheergasse. It would be another twenty years before the effervescent youthful work with echoes of folk dances was heard in public.
Schubert expert Jan Willem de Vriend conducts
The chief conductor of the Vienna Chamber Orchestra, Jan Willem de Vriend, who has particular expertise in Schubert and has already recorded all of his symphonies, includes it on the programme alongside an overture by Luigi Cherubini. Violinist Sergei Khachatryan will provide the virtuoso solo prelude with Beethoven's Violin Concerto.
