The young American Jonathan Safran Foer travels to Ukraine with an old photograph in his luggage. Pictured here is Augustine, who is said to have saved Jonathan's Jewish grandfather from the Nazis towards the end of World War II. The search for her and a place called Trachimbrod, where the family originates, unfolds into an emotional and absurd story of misunderstandings, friendships, and the fatal axis between past and present.

Director Mina Salehpour and her team focus on Jonathan's companion, the Ukrainian interpreter and tour guide Alexander. They search for traces of Trachimbrod, a village in present-day Ukraine that was razed to the ground by the Nazis during World War II.
