Der Tartuffe

In Molière's comedy, Tartuffe pretends to be the embodiment of piety, thereby gaining the favor of Orgon, who lives with his family in a comfortable, middle-class environment. Orgon not only welcomes Tartuffe into his ranks, offering him room and board, but also trustfully entrusts him with his possessions, his secrets, and his daughter, Mariane, who is actually in love with Valère. Incomprehension and distrust of Tartuffe spread throughout the family until Orgon's wife, Elmire, finally exposes the imposter.

In her production, Barbara Frey examines the mechanisms of manipulation and reveals the depths of a society that seems to know “good“ perfectly.
