Der Zarewitsch
13.04.2026 - 25.06.2026 | Wiener Volksoper
Experience The Tsarevich, Franz Lehár’s deeply moving operetta about loneliness, longing, and forbidden love.
The young heir Aljoscha feels lost in a world where true intimacy is forbidden. Although he avoids contact with women, he yearns for affection and connection. His longing is fulfilled when he meets a supposed young man — an “angel“ who soon reveals herself to be Sonja, a disguised ballet dancer sent to him to ensure the dynasty’s future. In the midst of courtly intrigues, a tender, forbidden love blossoms. Yet their relationship defies the expectations of their world. Will Aljoscha and Sonja dare to fight for their love?
Dutch director and visual artist Steef de Jong presents The Tsarevich in a new light: relocating the story from historical Russia to a magical, dreamlike land. On stage, a live animated silent film unfolds — imaginatively illustrated with hand-drawn scenery and live projections. Four singers bring this poetic, enchanting world to life with great emotional depth.
Immerse yourself in a unique operetta experience that touches the heart and inspires the imagination!
