The megalomaniac and bourgeois landlord Brouček (in German, “beetle“) embarks on two fantastic journeys: first to the moon, inhabited by an artists' colony, and then to medieval Prague, where he is to join the Hussites in war against the Crusaders.

With The Excursions of Mr. Brouček, the Czech composer Leoš Janáček created an opera in 1920 that combines sharp-tongued social criticism and a humorous exploration of people's very personal desires. The literary-savvy composer, who was always most satisfied with his own librettos, lets worlds beyond the bourgeois imagination collide, based on two stories by the Czech author Svatopluk Čech.

The music is as dazzling and multifaceted as the plot itself. Janáček's unique operatic poetics, oscillating between romanticism and realism, transform the socially critical satire into atmospheric and dynamic musical drama. This operatic rarity, brimming with magical imagination and suitable for the entire family, young and old, is brought to the stage by the team led by director Tobias Ribitzki, whose recent production of Falstaff caused a sensation with audiences and the press.

Tiroler Landestheater Innsbruck (English: Tyrolean State Theatre) is the state theatre in Innsbruck, Austria, located near the historic Altstadt (Old Town) section of the city. The theatre is surrounded by Imperial Hofburg, the Hofgarten, and SOWI Faculty of the University of Innsbruck. The main theatre has about 800 seats and the studio theatre in the basement has around 250. Plays, operas, operettas, musicals and dance theatre are performed at the theatre.
