Die Piraten von Penzance
27.03.2026 - 02.05.2026 | Wiener Volksoper
Experience The Pirates of Penzance, one of the most humorous and charming operettas ever created! The famous duo Gilbert & Sullivan masterfully subverts all expectations with British wit and satirical finesse: pirates in the tranquil idyll of Penzance – a brilliant parody of romantic adventure tales!
The story begins with a fateful misunderstanding: instead of being trained as a pilot, young Frederic is mistakenly apprenticed to a band of pirates due to his governess’s confusion between “pilot“ and “pirate.“ On his 21st birthday, he should finally be free – but having been born in a leap year, he is, by pirate logic, only five years old. Amidst this absurd dilemma, Frederic falls in love with Mabel, the daughter of a Major-General. Will love prevail, and can the pirates be defeated? A surprising resolution awaits – of course, under the benevolent eye of the Queen.
The production is directed by Spymonkey, the celebrated physical comedy duo, who already thrilled audiences and critics at the Volksoper with Orpheus in the Underworld. With plenty of humor, slapstick, and exuberant energy, they now bring the most British of all operettas to the stage.
Book your tickets now and enjoy an evening full of British humor, lively music, and whimsical pirate adventures!
