KaiserRequiem – The Emperor of Atlantis by Viktor Ullmann / Requiem in D minor, KV 626 by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
In German and Latin with German and English surtitles
Recommended from age 14
Emperor Overall rules Atlantis with an iron fist. When he declares a war of all against all, Death refuses to continue his work. The Emperor presents himself as the inventor of immortality – but without death, the world descends into chaos. Ultimately, he must face the loss of his power.
In 1943/44, Viktor Ullmann composed The Emperor of Atlantis in the Theresienstadt concentration camp – a deeply moving musical protest against tyranny and war. Shortly afterward, Ullmann and librettist Peter Kien were deported to Auschwitz and murdered.
For KaiserRequiem, conductor Omer Meir Wellber unites Ullmann’s chamber opera with Mozart’s haunting Requiem – two masterpieces in dialogue about mortality, power, and the human condition. Featuring dancers of the Vienna State Ballet as well as soloists, choir, and orchestra of the Volksoper Vienna, directed and choreographed by Andreas Heise.
