Performers:
Arcadi Volodos, piano
Pure romance
One of the most fascinating pianists of our time invites you to an extraordinary concert evening dedicated entirely to the inner world of two great Romantics: Frédéric Chopin and Franz Schubert.
Frédéric Chopin
The concert opens with selected mazurkas by Chopin – works full of fine rubati, melancholy colours and dance-like elegance. Volodos allows the seemingly small forms to blossom with great intensity before the mysterious Prélude in C sharp minor op. 45 leads the way to the monumental Sonata in B flat minor op. 35. This key work of piano literature – with its famous funeral march – unfolds a dramatic range between intimate lyricism and existential force in Volodos' hands.
Franz Schubert
After the interval, a new cosmos opens up: Franz Schubert's last piano sonata in B flat major D 960, one of the most moving farewell works in music history. Arcadi Volodos performs this sonata with great calm, inner tension and a tonal culture that turns every moment into an event.
