Marie Antoinette
20.12.2025 - 05.04.2026 | Wiener Volksoper
Experience the fascinating world of the legendary French queen Marie Antoinette in an impressive ballet by Thierry Malandain. Inspired by this dazzling historical figure, the renowned French choreographer, together with the Malandain Ballet Biarritz, presents a masterful portrait that unites elegance, tragedy, and powerful emotion.
Set to the music of Joseph Haydn and Christoph Willibald Gluck, the ballet narrates Marie Antoinette’s life – from her arrival at the French court, through lavish weddings and grand festivities, to her dramatic fall and attempted escape. A highlight includes the inauguration of the Royal Opera House of Versailles with Jean-Baptiste Lully’s Persée, staged as a “ballet within the ballet.“
Thierry Malandain’s distinctive style fuses baroque gestures with modern neoclassicism, creating a choreography full of strength, grace, and poetry. His interpretation portrays Marie Antoinette not just as a symbol of luxury and excess but as a tragic figure who was manipulated throughout her life and ultimately descended into loneliness and melancholy.
Experience a profound and emotional journey through the life of one of history’s most famous women – filled with beauty, tragedy, and timeless elegance.
