Handlung:
 
Schottland, 16. Jahrhundert.
Zwischen den katholischen Adeligen der Familie Ravenswood und der protestantischen Familie Aston herrscht eine erbitterte Fehde. Lucia und Edgardo jedoch haben sich trotz aller Feindschaft verliebt. 
 
Als Lucias Bruder Enrico dahinterkommt, fälscht er einen Brief, der Edgardo Untreue unterstellt und zwingt seine Schwester in eine Vermählung mit Lord Arturo Bucklaw.
Als Edgardo in die Trauung platzt und Lucia verflucht, sind alle entsetzt.
 
Im Brautgemach tötet Lucia Arturo mit einem Messer. Wahnvorstellungen überkommen sie. Als eine Glocke ihren Tod verkündet, ersticht sich Edgardo.
