Spring Awakening
19.02.2026 - 07.04.2026 | Wiener Volksoper
Experience Spring Awakening, a powerful rock musical about the challenges of growing up, the failures of communication between generations, and the struggles and upheavals of awakening sexuality – timeless and universal. Winner of eight Tony Awards, including Best Musical, and a Grammy Award, this groundbreaking work redefined what Broadway musicals can address and portray.
Germany, 1891: A group of young people confronts the rigid boundaries of a strictly regulated adult world. Wendla begins to explore her body, but her mother refuses her any guidance. Melchior tries to support his overwhelmed friend Moritz. As Wendla and Melchior draw closer, they have no idea of the tragic consequences their desire will have.
Based on Frank Wedekind’s 1891 play Frühlings Erwachen, Steven Sater and Duncan Sheik’s adaptation brings a modern and authentic perspective to the subject. Developed over seven years and shaped by input from young people, it addresses the timeless fears, worries, and hopes of adolescence. The dynamic songs give voice to the characters' deepest emotions and inner conflicts.
