Operetta by Johann Strauss
In German with German and English surtitles
“Happy is he who forgets what cannot be changed!“ Arguably the most beloved and certainly the most Viennese of all operettas, Johann Strauss' immortal Die Fledermaus offers extravagant parties, erotic mix-ups, intrigues, conspiracies, and a generous dose of schadenfreude – classic Viennese operetta entertainment in waltz time. When the social facade cracks, one can always blame it all on the effects of champagne. “In the fiery flood of the vines,“ it’s easy to go overboard.
The Volksoper is considered the most Viennese opera house in the city, so it's no surprise that Strauss' masterpiece is a true treasure of the house. It remains the most frequently performed work at the Volksoper. At the beginning of Lotte de Beer's directorship, the production was carefully refreshed, now featuring a female version of the traditionally male character Frosch for a fresh perspective.
