Rosalind, the daughter of the old duke, disguises herself as a man to visit her father, exiled to the forests of Arden, and escape the violence of his brother, the power-hungry autocrat Frederick. Or does she rather intend to seduce Orlando, who is also exiled and has little experience in matters of relationships, into a love affair? In the role of her alter ego “Ganymede,“ she pretends to teach Orlando how to overcome his infatuation with her, Rosalind.
With AS YOU LIKE IT (1599), William Shakespeare wrote perhaps the most delightful romantic comedy of all time, with a protagonist as its pivotal point, still exceptionally complex and fascinating. The play seems to have inspired Billy Wilder, Woody Allen, and series like “Sex Education.“ Its theme is the dream of true love, which seems unattainable due to doubt, immaturity, misunderstandings, and social conventions, but is within reach at the right moment. A sensual classic characterized by colorful characters, aphrodisiac language, and surprising erotic sparks. AS YOU LIKE IT explores questions of authority and anarchy, subversion and role-playing, therapy and self-discovery—all in a fantasy world of unexpected twists and turns and constant transformation, where everyone is challenged to constantly reexamine themselves and their counterparts.
