But even in matters of love, things are in turmoil in Mr. Zins's apartment building. There can be no talk of orderly circumstances.

Johann Nestroy's musical satire about the whims of fortune, written in 1835, premiered at the Theater an der Wien and became a sensation: two floors on one stage had never been seen before. To this day, this idea provides a compelling image of the insoluble dialectic between those above and those below.
